NYC Planning Commission\u2019s proposal to remove protections for archaeological and historical resources in City parks<\/h3>\n

The Executive Board and the members of the Council for Northeast Historical Archaeology wish to express our deep concern with the City Planning Commission\u2019s proposal to remove protections for archaeological and historical resources in City parks. Though seemingly small in size and import, and undeveloped because they are \u201copen spaces,\u201d such parcels have the potential to contain highly significant remains from both prehistoric and historical periods.

Treasure Hunt at Flowerdew Hundred<\/h3>\n

The following article,\u00a0Flowerdew Hundred Plantation and the 2013 Grand National Relic Shootout<\/span>, will appear in CNEHA\u2019S fall newsletter and is being jointly published by SHA and CNEHA regarding the treasure hunt at Flowerdew Hundred. Also attached is a letter to accompany the article that puts these events into a broader context. Last March over 200 metal-detector-wielding members of a relic collectors club descended on the historic Flowerdew Plantation and removed 8,961 metal artifacts dating to between ca. 1590 and 1865.

Conservation Letter to Congress from AVCRP<\/h3>\n

Metal Detector Hunt at Flowerdw Hundred<\/h3>\n

As most of you know, Flowerdew Hundred is a nationally and internationally significant property that is on the National Register of Historic Places, and has been the subject of many important archaeological excavations and educational programs for the past 40 years, and as recently as 2010. Shockingly, the plantation was the site of a recent, large-scale organized metal detector \u201chunt\u201d that Taft Kiser details in this piece.

International Archaeology Day 2013<\/h3>\n

October 19th is International Archaeology Day organized by the American Institute of America. International Archaeology Day is a celebration of archaeology and the thrill of discovery. Every October the AIA and archaeological organizations across the United States, Canada (including CNEHA), and abroad present archaeological programs and activities for people of all ages and interests. Whether it is a family-friendly archaeology fair, a guided tour of a local archaeological site, a simulated dig, a lecture or a classroom visit from an archaeologist, the interactive, hands-on International Archaeology Day programs provide the chance to indulge your inner Indiana Jones.

2013 New Sweden 375th Anniversary Conference<\/h3>\n

The 2013 New Sweden 375th Anniversary Conference will take place from Nov. 8 to 10, 2013 at the University of Delaware’s Clayton Hall in Newark, Del. with a live video-feed of concurrent sessions at the University of Lund in Sweden. Entitled \u201c;Encountering \u2018Others\u2019 in the Atlantic World: Perspectives from the Material World,\u201d the conference is an international forum on comparative colonialism that will also serve as the annual meeting of the Council for Northeast Historical Archaeology and the New Sweden History Conference.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
